Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Goodrich

Marine Staff Sergeant Joseph P. Goodrich, 32, of  Pittsburgh's Westwood neighborhood lost his life in combat with the enemy in Hit, Iraq on Sunday July 10, 2005.

Joseph was a second-generation Marine.  His father, James Goodrich served with the Marines in the South Pacific during World War II.

His wife, Amy Goodrich, said that "The Marines were his family, and he was proud to be a Marine".

Amy and Joseph were married for 6 1/2 years.
In a letter that Joseph wrote to Amy, he tried to offer up an explanation as to why he was a Marine by looking back to his childhood visits to the graves of veterans.  He said, "looking at all the headstones with flags in front of them, I started to think about who they were, how they lived, how they died, and what they did for me".

His memory will remain forever.
